Join us for the 2019 CWEA Percussion/Winds Instructor Summit!

The Percussion/Winds Instructor Summit is scheduled for December 7, 2019 at Wade Hampton High School in Greenville, South Carolina. This clinic offers the opportunity for instructors, designers, group directors and band directors from all levels of experience to learn new approaches and ideas to take back to their programs.

The clinic will feature sessions on sound engineering and design, program design, adjudication criteria and much more.

Clinic Schedule

9:00 AM - Registration Begins

9:15 AM - Session 1 - Let's Coordinate! (Overall Show Design Focus) - presented by Wayne Dillon

This session focuses on show coordination in program design, with emphasis is on creating a program that has a unified voice both musically and visually. Examine the characteristics and elements that create a unified product by studying pageantry examples where designers explain the intent of the design with respect to audio visual coordination. Other topics include examples of audio to audio, visual to visual, and audio to visual coordination.

11:00 AM - Session 2 - Winds Technique and Training: A Fundamental Approach - presented by Wayne Dillon

This session focuses on winds pedagogy for A and Open class ensembles, and fall marching bands. The session prioritizes the fundamentals of breathing, sound, tuning, articulation balance/blend, and listening skills. Topics include time management and rehearsal planning, as well as prioritizing and goal setting. Participants receive a warm up routine and chorale to take back to their programs.

12:15 PM - Lunch (on your own)

1:30 PM - Session 3 - Arranging and Orchestrating for Marching and Concert Classes - presented by Matt Hernandez

This session focuses on show design with emphasis on creating an effective arrangement to convey the message of your show. Matt will utilize examples from Ayala High Schools numerous ensembles to showcase best practices and techniques that you can utilize, including sound reinforcement and electronic design.

2:45 PM - Session 4 - Changes for 2020, Guide to Judging and Knowing Your Responsibilities - presented by Mike Leitzke

This session focuses on changes that are coming in 2020 from the 2019 PAB meeting as well as an overview of the judging system, how to read the sheets and apply them to commentary/scoring, and an overview of the instructor/designer/judge responsibilities. This will include an interactive segment where you will sit in the seat of a judge and make commentary to a performance.

4:00 PM - Clinic Concludes

Tickets purchased for this event are considered a revokable license to attend the stated event. CWEA reserves the right to revoke admission with or without refund of admission.
